SUMMARY:Conservation and Nature Book Club: March
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Warren County Conservation will be hosting a bi-monthly book club. Simply read the suggested book and join us at the Middleswart Lodge for a book discussion followed by an extended activity related each months book choice. There is no charge for this program\, but participants will need to provide their own copy of the book. Please register ahead so we can have enough materials at www.warrenccb.org/events. \nFor the month of March please read “American Wolf ” A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West\, by Nate Blakeslee. “Before men ruled the earth\, there were wolves. Once abundant in North America\, these majestic creatures were hunted to near extinction in the lower 48 states by the 1920s. But in recent decades\, conservationists have brought wolves back to the Rockies\, igniting a battle over the very soul of the West. \nWith novelistic detail\, Nate Blakeslee tells the gripping story of one of these wolves\, O-Six\, a charismatic alpha female named for the year of her birth. Uncommonly powerful\, with gray fur and faint black ovals around each eye\, O-Six is a kind and merciful leader\, a fiercely intelligent fighter\, and a doting mother. She is beloved by wolf watchers\, particularly renowned naturalist Rick McIntyre\, and becomes something of a social media star\, with followers around the world. \nBut as she raises her pups and protects her pack\, O-Six is challenged on all fronts: by hunters\, who compete with wolves for the elk they both prize; by cattle ranchers who are losing livestock and have the ear of politicians; and by other Yellowstone wolves who are vying for control of the park’s stunningly beautiful Lamar Valley. These forces collide in American Wolf\, a riveting multigenerational saga of hardship and triumph that tells a larger story about the ongoing cultural clash in the West—between those fighting for a vanishing way of life and those committed to restoring one of the country’s most iconic landscapes.”- Penguin Random House

DESCRIPTION:Warren County Conservation invites you to join us in a nature & forest therapy guided immersive walk in nature. Forest therapy is a practice that brings people into a closer relationship with nature and natural places. \nWe invite you to unplug\, slow down\, and experience mindfulness in nature. These gentle three-hour walks will focus on opening and using all your senses to explore nature. Shinrin-yoku or forest therapy can provide many positive health benefits such as boosted immune functions\, lowered blood pressure\, decreased anxiety\, increased focus and attention\, relaxation\, and a connection with nature. Staff is certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Association. \nForest Therapy is a practice. It is open-ended; there is no prescription for what a person “should” experience\, or what benefits they “should” receive. Each person has a different relationship with nature. \n*Location Information: The trail that we will take near the Middleswart Lodge can be steep in some areas. We will be walking at a leisurely pace\, and can easily take breaks as we go along. This is not a distance hike\, but enjoying the journey. Depending on the weather it may be muddy.  \n**Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather and dress in layers. We will hike if it is light rain (adds quite a bit to the experience) but not if it is thunderstorming.  \nThe fee for this walk is $20 per person and registration is required by Thursday\, March 23rd.

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Yoga
DESCRIPTION:The energy of the Winter Solstice is deeply reflective. The Winter Solstice marks a return to light from darkness that we experience within ourselves and in nature during the cold winter months. Yoga helps us move through this season and more deeply align with the energy of the changing seasons\, and release unwanted darkness that no longer serves us. \nJoin Bethany with Begin Again Yoga for a 90-minute yoga class that will move through postures that are held for longer periods of time in a restorative manner\, paired with meditation techniques to relax both the body and mind. This class will focus on letting go of what is no longer serving us and explore the depth of postures to bring new opportunities. Bethany approaches her yoga classes with all levels of yogis in mind\, so all are welcome to this practice. A yoga mat\, layered clothing\, and water bottle are encouraged for this class. \nBethany combines yoga postures\, breath work\, and mindfulness into a complete package for therapeutic classes. She first started practicing yoga to help alleviate the side effects of stress and anxiety. The journey has brought her to share those same healing experiences as a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher to those who would like to live a more enjoyable life and have better general wellness. Bethany leads her mixed-level community classes with a goal of others experiencing the same benefits of yoga on the mind\, body\, and spirit. \nThis class is being offered at a discounted rate by Warren County Conservation and is only $15 per person. This will be held at the Middleswart Lodge at 15875 118th Ave Indianola\, IA 50125.
