DESCRIPTION:This Month: \n \nJanuary’s Homeschool Wednesday (HW) theme is: Winter Survival. This session will be for grades 4th and up. Participants will work together to learn shelter building\, fire starting\, and what to do in a winter emergency! There is a maximum capacity of 20 participants for this class. Please register below! \nThis class will hike out away from the Center and will be done mostly outside in the park\, or possibly across the street at Lake Ahquabi. Please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather and conditions. Families are welcome to take advantage of the Annett Nature Center while we are at our class. \n  \nAbout Homeschool Wednesdays:\nOne Wednesday each month\, we will have a specific program topic chosen. There will be different times specified for different age groups to allow learning at their level\, with their peers. The topic may be the same but have slightly different activities based on the ages present. \nOur wish is that Homeschool Wednesdays offers a chance for non-traditionally educated students to get together with other students their age to learn about a fun\, educational topic. We also hope this serves as a new outlet to socialize with other students who are also learning at home. \nWe hope you will take advantage of our trails\, shelters\, and Nature Center before and/or after your child’s age group’s program to take an exploration hike\, bring a lesson from home to a new setting\, eat lunch\, or explore the exhibits in the nature center.

From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to the beauty of jewel caterpillars\, Tallamy illuminates and celebrates the wonders that occur right in our own backyards. He also shares practical advice about how to plant and care for an oak\, along with information about the best oak species for your area. DESCRIPTION:Head on out to the Annett Nature Center for our Iowa Invaders Halloween Hike. This non-scary hike is educational and fun for the whole family. You will be guided along the trail to meet different characters\, including: Canada thistle\, zebra mussel\, wild parsnip\, Asian carp\, and an emerald ash borer. After the hike you can make a craft and enjoy some treats. The cost is $5 per person and those under 3 are free.\nHikes leave the nature center at 6:30\, 6:40\, 6:50\, 7:00\, 7:10\, 7:20\, and 7:30.\n**Registration and prepayment are required. Call 515-961-6169 to register.\n**Please arrive at the Annett Nature Center 5-10 minutes early to get checked in. The hikes leave the nature center at the scheduled times. In order to maintain the schedule throughout the entire night\, we will not hold hikes. If you arrive late for your scheduled time\, we will do our best to get you into the next open time\, however that may be at the end of the night. Please register ahead so we can have enough materials at www.warrenccb.org/events.\nFor the month of September please read “Bicycling with Butterflies”. Written by Sara Dykman. Sara is an outdoor educator and field researcher\, who achieved a remarkable feat when she became the first person to accompany monarch butterflies on their annual migration\, covering a distance of over 10\,000 miles across three countries. What made her journey even more extraordinary was that she completed it solo and on a bicycle she constructed using secondhand components.

DESCRIPTION:What is the Geocaching Mineral Adventure?\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are 25 Geocaching Adventure Caches hidden in county\, state and city parks around Warren County. Your challenge is to explore parks and find them all using a GPS. Each cache includes an instruction card\, a logbook\, and a stack of themed trading cards. Sign the logbook to show that you found the cache and take a trading card for your collection. Discover the parks in the evening or your back yard and see if you can identify a mineral.\nAfter finding all 25 caches\, take your 25 trading cards to the Annett Nature Center. We will give you the coordinates to find the last cache challenge. Take a picture of yourself with the very last card or all of your trading cards. Feel free to include family\, friends\, your dog or anyone else that helped you finish the challenge. All participants who successfully finish the challenge by November 1\, 2023 will receive a finisher’s token and your photo will be posted on our Facebook page as Geocaching Adventure Finisher. \nDon’t know where to start?\n\n\nWe welcome you to stop in at the Annett Nature Center to learn more about geocaching. Bring a friend or come by yourself to slowdown\, unplug\, and get in touch with your senses. \nWhat is Forest Therapy?\nWarren County Conservation offers nature & forest therapy guided walks throughout the year at various locations. We invite you to unplug\, slow down\, and experience mindfulness in nature. These gentle three-hour walks will focus on using all your senses to explore nature. Shinrin-yoku or forest therapy can provide many positive health benefits such as lowered blood pressure\, decreased anxiety\, increased focus\, relaxation\, and a connection with nature. Staff is certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Association.

Written by Neil D. Hamilton who spent 36 years as a Professor Emeritus of Law and former Director of the Agricultural Law Center of Drake University. His book blends a personal memoir\, a history of Iowa land conservation\, contemporary issues of water quality\, public lands\, and future challenges to tell the story of how land shapes our lives right here in Iowa.\n\nFriends of Warren County Conservation will be hosting an informal reception and serving light refreshments after the discussion. Please RSVP by Friday July 14th.
