Marsupial Madness is an interactive and educational program designed to introduce participants to the fascinating world of marsupials\, with a special focus on opossums\, North America’s only marsupial! \nThe program will begin with a brief lesson that covers essential marsupial facts\, including how marsupials differ from placental mammals\, the phenomenon of marsupial pouches\, and the wide variety of marsupial species around the world. \nFollowing the lesson\, the program offers an opportunity to meet a real-life opossum\, our very own animal ambassador: Marsi! Learn why we have Marsi (who is non-releasable)\, and how we can help other wildlife stay in the wild where they are happiest! *Keep in mind that this will be one of Marsi’s first programs and she is still getting used to people. Animals have their own feelings (shy\, nervous\, interested\, scared) that we cannot control but should respect and Marsi may have her own ideas of how to interact at the program! 😉 \nThis program is free\, but please register by February 12th at noon with the total number of people in your party that will be attending so that we know how many people to plan for! \nWatch the video to see Marsi on an adventure when finding out her name!

Your job will be to find 10 hearts both inside and outside the nature center. You will be given clues to find each of the hearts. Each clue will be about a living thing. You will need to figure out what living thing that is and where it is. At each heart there will be one piece you will need to pick up and take with you for a craft. Are you up for the challenge? \nThis program is great for the whole family\, the targeted age range will be 7 to 10-year-olds. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

DESCRIPTION:This Month:\nFebruary’s HW theme is: Snow. There will be 3 classes for this lesson. Registrations will open 1 month prior to the date at 10am.\n***Due to an all staff training\, we had to adjust some of the times of these classes.** \n9-10am: Snow Lesson – Registration closed. FULL\n1st Grade and under\, with a maximum of 25 participants. This session we will learn about what snow is\, where it comes from\, and make a fun snowy craft! This session will mostly be indoors. \n10:00-11:00am: Snow Lesson\n2nd Grade – 5th Grade with a maximum of 25 participants. This session we will learn about how snow is made\, and the different types of snow\, and make a fun snowy craft! This session will mostly be indoors. \n2:00-3:30pm: Snowshoeing\n6th Grade & Up with a maximum of 20 participants. This session we will learn about the history of snowshoes\, how to measure and put on snowshoes\, and we will go on a snowshoe hike. This session will be mostly outdoors\, please wear sturdy\, warm\, waterproof boots. (Ugg type boots don’t work very well for this.)\n*This program requires 4 or more inches of snow to prevent damage to the snowshoes\, and will be canceled if we do not have enough snow.* \nAbout Homeschool Wednesdays:\nOne Wednesday each month\, we will have a specific program topic chosen. There will be different times specified for different age groups to allow learning at their level\, with their peers. This program is designed to provide a memorable and educational outdoor experience\, blending tranquility\, adventure\, and history! \nAs the sun sinks further behind the horizon\, a naturalist will lead you through carefully chosen trails\, ensuring your safety while experiencing the natural world in a whole new (lack of) light. The trail will be illuminated only by the glow of the full moon\, creating an atmospheric ambiance that adds a touch of mystery and magic to the adventure. If the sky is cloudy it will cause the trail to be even darker! This program is tailored to cater to participants of various fitness levels and age groups. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or a beginner\, we will adjust the pace and difficulty according to the group’s requirements\, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience. \nThis guided nocturnal exploration provides a unique opportunity to witness the nocturnal wildlife in action. Listen attentively and you may catch the sounds of hooting owls\, croaking frogs\, or rustling wildlife. Spotting nocturnal creatures like foxes\, deer\, or even an elusive raccoon adds an extra layer of excitement to the adventure. \nNo flashlights are required. While you can bring a flashlight if you feel absolutely necessary\, we ask that you do not turn it on unless absolutely necessary! We want to have a chance to experience our true night vision. The naturalist will have lights in case of emergency.

DESCRIPTION:Spend an evening with a Warren County Conservation Naturalist and create your very own holiday themed terrariums! We will provide the materials and instruction for kids to make and take home a terrarium with a plant and decor. \nChildren 7 and younger will need an adult to help them create their terrariums and follow the steps. Simply read the suggested book and join us at the Middleswart Lodge for discussion followed by an extended activity related to the book. There is no charge for this program\, but participants will need to provide their own copy of the book. Please register ahead so we can have enough materials at www.warrenccb.org/events. \nFor the month of November please read “The Nature of Oak\, The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees”. Written by Douglas W. Tallamy. This book reveals what is going on in oak trees month by month\, highlighting the seasonal cycles of life\, death\, and renewal. From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to the beauty of jewel caterpillars\, Tallamy illuminates and celebrates the wonders that occur right in our own backyards. He also shares practical advice about how to plant and care for an oak\, along with information about the best oak species for your area. The Nature of Oaks will inspire you to treasure these trees and to act to nurture and protect them. \nPrevious books by Douglas W. Tallamy are “Bringing Nature Home” and “Nature’s Best Hope”.

Your challenge is to explore parks and find them all using a GPS. Each cache includes an instruction card\, a logbook\, and a stack of themed trading cards. Sign the logbook to show that you found the cache and take a trading card for your collection. Discover the parks in the evening or your back yard and see if you can identify a mineral.\nAfter finding all 25 caches\, take your 25 trading cards to the Annett Nature Center. We will give you the coordinates to find the last cache challenge. Take a picture of yourself with the very last card or all of your trading cards. Feel free to include family\, friends\, your dog or anyone else that helped you finish the challenge. All participants who successfully finish the challenge by November 1\, 2023 will receive a finisher’s token and your photo will be posted on our Facebook page as Geocaching Adventure Finisher. \nDon’t know where to start?\n\n\nWe welcome you to stop in at the Annett Nature Center to learn more about geocaching. SUMMARY:2023 Annual Halloween Hike
DESCRIPTION:Head on out to the Annett Nature Center for our Iowa Invaders Halloween Hike. This non-scary hike is educational and fun for the whole family. You will be guided along the trail to meet different characters\, including: Canada thistle\, zebra mussel\, wild parsnip\, Asian carp\, and an emerald ash borer. After the hike you can make a craft and enjoy some treats. The cost is $5 per person and those under 3 are free.\nHikes leave the nature center at 6:30\, 6:40\, 6:50\, 7:00\, 7:10\, 7:20\, and 7:30.\n**Registration and prepayment are required. Call 515-961-6169 to register.\n**Please arrive at the Annett Nature Center 5-10 minutes early to get checked in. The hikes leave the nature center at the scheduled times. In order to maintain the schedule throughout the entire night\, we will not hold hikes. If you arrive late for your scheduled time\, we will do our best to get you into the next open time\, however that may be at the end of the night. We do have a maximum number of hikers per group time to avoid overcrowding\, and to make sure everyone can hear at each stop on the trail.** \nIf you would like to volunteer to help with the Halloween Hike please contact hannahh@warrencountyia.org

Sara is an outdoor educator and field researcher\, who achieved a remarkable feat when she became the first person to accompany monarch butterflies on their annual migration\, covering a distance of over 10\,000 miles across three countries. What made her journey even more extraordinary was that she completed it solo and on a bicycle she constructed using secondhand components.
