DESCRIPTION:This Month: \n \nJanuary’s Homeschool Wednesday (HW) theme is: Winter Survival. This session will be for grades 4th and up. Participants will work together to learn shelter building\, fire starting\, and what to do in a winter emergency! There is a maximum capacity of 20 participants for this class. Please register below! \nThis class will hike out away from the Center and will be done mostly outside in the park\, or possibly across the street at Lake Ahquabi. Please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather and conditions. Families are welcome to take advantage of the Annett Nature Center while we are at our class. \n  \nAbout Homeschool Wednesdays:\nOne Wednesday each month\, we will have a specific program topic chosen. There will be different times specified for different age groups to allow learning at their level\, with their peers. The topic may be the same but have slightly different activities based on the ages present. \nOur wish is that Homeschool Wednesdays offers a chance for non-traditionally educated students to get together with other students their age to learn about a fun\, educational topic. We also hope this serves as a new outlet to socialize with other students who are also learning at home. \nWe hope you will take advantage of our trails\, shelters\, and Nature Center before and/or after your child’s age group’s program to take an exploration hike\, bring a lesson from home to a new setting\, eat lunch\, or explore the exhibits in the nature center.

From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to the beauty of jewel caterpillars\, Tallamy illuminates and celebrates the wonders that occur right in our own backyards. He also shares practical advice about how to plant and care for an oak\, along with information about the best oak species for your area. The Nature of Oaks will inspire you to treasure these trees and to act to nurture and protect them. \nPrevious books by Douglas W. Tallamy are “Bringing Nature Home” and “Nature’s Best Hope”.

SUMMARY:2023 Annual Halloween Hike
DESCRIPTION:Head on out to the Annett Nature Center for our Iowa Invaders Halloween Hike. This non-scary hike is educational and fun for the whole family. You will be guided along the trail to meet different characters\, including: Canada thistle\, zebra mussel\, wild parsnip\, Asian carp\, and an emerald ash borer. After the hike you can make a craft and enjoy some treats. The cost is $5 per person and those under 3 are free.\nHikes leave the nature center at 6:30\, 6:40\, 6:50\, 7:00\, 7:10\, 7:20\, and 7:30.\n**Registration and prepayment are required. Call 515-961-6169 to register.\n**Please arrive at the Annett Nature Center 5-10 minutes early to get checked in. The hikes leave the nature center at the scheduled times. In order to maintain the schedule throughout the entire night\, we will not hold hikes. If you arrive late for your scheduled time\, we will do our best to get you into the next open time\, however that may be at the end of the night. Sara is an outdoor educator and field researcher\, who achieved a remarkable feat when she became the first person to accompany monarch butterflies on their annual migration\, covering a distance of over 10\,000 miles across three countries. What made her journey even more extraordinary was that she completed it solo and on a bicycle she constructed using secondhand components.

Bring a friend or come by yourself to slowdown\, unplug\, and get in touch with your senses. \nWhat is Forest Therapy?\nWarren County Conservation offers nature & forest therapy guided walks throughout the year at various locations. We invite you to unplug\, slow down\, and experience mindfulness in nature. These gentle three-hour walks will focus on using all your senses to explore nature. Shinrin-yoku or forest therapy can provide many positive health benefits such as lowered blood pressure\, decreased anxiety\, increased focus\, relaxation\, and a connection with nature. Staff is certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Association.

DESCRIPTION:Have some fishing fun with us! Bring the family out to learn the art of fishing. Participants can learn how to tie knots\, cast\, and fish safely. The fishing competition will take place at Lester Pond. There will be awards\, door prizes\, and a free fish-cleaning demonstration. Bring your own pole or borrow one of ours. Bait will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Come out to the Annett Nature Center to join in on an Earth Day celebration trail cleanup. Cleanups like this help reduce waste and plastic pollution\, which help improve habitats\, prevent harm to wildlife and humans\, help improve water quality\, and contribute to a healthier community overall. This is a great opportunity to get involved\, get to know a Warren County Park\, and be a part of a bigger movement.\n\nCome when you can for as much as you can.\n\n \nSiegwerk has graciously donated funds for garbage bags\, gloves\, and other materials needed for the trash clean up. You may want to bring work gloves and wear long pants in case you need to go off trail.\n\n*Children and families are welcome\, but please keep in mind that this event is self-supervised. Children should be with their parent/guardian at all times.\nDirectly following the event\, at 12 noon to 1pm \nthe Friends of Warren County Conservation \nwill provide a light thank you lunch and have \nthe Annett Nature Center open for visits and tours!\n\n\nPlease register so we have an idea of how many materials to have on hand!

By reintroducing fire in a safe\, planned manner\, we recreate a process that maintains Iowa’s fertile soils in grasses and wildflowers.\n\nThis program is dependent on weather conditions. SUMMARY:Forest Therapy Hike: Spring Cleansing
DESCRIPTION:Warren County Conservation invites you to join us in a nature & forest therapy guided immersive walk in nature. Forest therapy is a practice that brings people into a closer relationship with nature and natural places. \nWe invite you to unplug\, slow down\, and experience mindfulness in nature. These gentle three-hour walks will focus on opening and using all your senses to explore nature. Shinrin-yoku or forest therapy can provide many positive health benefits such as boosted immune functions\, lowered blood pressure\, decreased anxiety\, increased focus and attention\, relaxation\, and a connection with nature. Staff is certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Association. \nForest Therapy is a practice. It is open-ended; there is no prescription for what a person “should” experience\, or what benefits they “should” receive. Each person has a different relationship with nature. \n*Location Information: The trail that we will take near the Middleswart Lodge can be steep in some areas. We will be walking at a leisurely pace\, and can easily take breaks as we go along. This is not a distance hike\, but enjoying the journey. Depending on the weather it may be muddy.  \n**Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather and dress in layers. We will hike if it is light rain (adds quite a bit to the experience) but not if it is thunderstorming.  \nThe fee for this walk is $20 per person and registration is required by Thursday\, March 23rd.
