DESCRIPTION:Come learn all about what it means to be a marsupial! Marsupial Madness is an interactive and educational program designed to introduce participants to the fascinating world of marsupials\, with a special focus on opossums\, North America’s only marsupial! \nThe program will begin with a brief lesson that covers essential marsupial facts\, including how marsupials differ from placental mammals\, the phenomenon of marsupial pouches\, and the wide variety of marsupial species around the world. \nFollowing the lesson\, the program offers an opportunity to meet a real-life opossum\, our very own animal ambassador: Marsi! Learn why we have Marsi (who is non-releasable)\, and how we can help other wildlife stay in the wild where they are happiest! \n*Registration is required*\n**Registration Will Open March 17th (one month before the event)**

SUMMARY:March Homeschool Wednesdays: Amphibians
DESCRIPTION:This Month:\nMarch’s HW theme is: Amphibians. There will be 2 classes for this lesson. \n1-2:30pm: Amphibian Lesson\n1st Grade and under\, with a maximum of 20 participants. This session we will learn about what makes an amphibian so special\, different types of amphibians\, and explore looking for and listening for different amphibians! \n1-2:30pm: Amphibian Lesson\n2nd – 5th Grade\, with a maximum of 15 participants. This session we will go on an amphibian hike looking for and listening for the sounds of amphibians! While doing this we’ll learn about the unique characteristics of amphibians and some of the special amphibians in Iowa. \n\nAbout Homeschool Wednesdays:\nOne Wednesday each month\, we will have a specific program topic chosen. There will be different times specified for different age groups to allow learning at their level\, with their peers. The topic may be the same but have slightly different activities based on the ages present. \nOur wish is that Homeschool Wednesdays offers a chance for non-traditionally educated students to get together with other students their age to learn about a fun\, educational topic. We also hope this serves as a new outlet to socialize with other students who are also learning at home. \nWe hope you will take advantage of our trails\, shelters\, and Nature Center before and/or after your child’s age group’s program to take an exploration hike\, bring a lesson from home to a new setting\, eat lunch\, or explore the exhibits in the nature center.

SUMMARY:February Homeschool Wednesdays: Snow
DESCRIPTION:This Month:\nFebruary’s HW theme is: Snow. There will be 3 classes for this lesson. Registrations will open 1 month prior to the date at 10am.\n***Due to an all staff training\, we had to adjust some of the times of these classes.** \n9-10am: Snow Lesson – Registration closed. FULL\n1st Grade and under\, with a maximum of 25 participants. This session we will learn about what snow is\, where it comes from\, and make a fun snowy craft! This session will mostly be indoors. \n10:00-11:00am: Snow Lesson\n2nd Grade – 5th Grade with a maximum of 25 participants. This session we will learn about how snow is made\, and the different types of snow\, and make a fun snowy craft! This session will mostly be indoors. \n2:00-3:30pm: Snowshoeing\n6th Grade & Up with a maximum of 20 participants. This session we will learn about the history of snowshoes\, how to measure and put on snowshoes\, and we will go on a snowshoe hike. This session will be mostly outdoors\, please wear sturdy\, warm\, waterproof boots. (Ugg type boots don’t work very well for this.)\n*This program requires 4 or more inches of snow to prevent damage to the snowshoes\, and will be canceled if we do not have enough snow.* \nAbout Homeschool Wednesdays:\nOne Wednesday each month\, we will have a specific program topic chosen. DESCRIPTION:This Month: \n \nJanuary’s Homeschool Wednesday (HW) theme is: Winter Survival. This session will be for grades 4th and up. Participants will work together to learn shelter building\, fire starting\, and what to do in a winter emergency! There is a maximum capacity of 20 participants for this class. Please register below! \nThis class will hike out away from the Center and will be done mostly outside in the park\, or possibly across the street at Lake Ahquabi. Please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather and conditions.
